TOURISM: Definitions, Concepts and Terms:
Tourism: The entire activity that deals with tourists. The business of attracting and taking care of tourists.
Tourist: Anyone travelling to a destination, staying at least 24 hours (overnight) but less than 1 year. Reasons include recreation, holiday, health, sport, religion, family reasons, or a delegate at a conference. The person travelling does not earn income in the place visited.
Types of Tourists
Tourism sector: The part of a country’s economy which is directly or indirectly affected by tourism.
Economic linkage Sectors of the economy that depend on each other for success e.g. tourism and transport; tourism and agriculture.
Economic leakage When money earned from an activity like tourism leaves the country. (To pay for imports, pay foreign workers & owners)
Tourism product Anything manufactured, produced or provided to satisfy the needs and wants of tourists. (e.g. Facilities, transport, tours, shows)
Some Types of Tourism Products
Home porting: The port where a cruise starts and takes on passengers, food and other supplies.
Host country: The country tourists travel to.
Supply country: The country tourists come from.

- International Tourist: travels outside his own country.
- Regional Tourist: travels within a specific geographical area.
- Domestic Tourist: spends at least one night away from where he normally lives but stays within his own country.
- Excursionist/Day-tripper: Temporary visitor staying less than 24 hours in the country visited.
- Cruise-passenger Travels on board ship and does not use accommodation on land.

Some Types of Tourism Products
- Nature tourism Sometimes called Eco-tourism, for those who want to observe plants and animals in natural surroundings. This can include beaches, sunshine, rainforests, animals, plant life, rivers, mountains, reefs
- Sports tourism: Opportunities to travel to take part or watch sports. E.g. Cricket, golf, tennis, hockey
- Health tourism: Stress-reducing holidays where visitors enjoy spas, gyms, jacuzzis, relaxation or to recover from illness.
- Heritage tourism Focuses on historical and cultural aspects- e.g. art, craft, music, steel band, festivals, plantation houses, artefacts etc.
- All inclusive The tourist pays for all or most of the services they will use before arriving in the destination.
- Timeshare: Part ownership in a tourist accommodation, and have the right to use it for one or more weeks every year.
- Marketing tourism: Selling tourism good/services to encourage visitor arrivals.
